Through the Brazilian Wilderness
19147.7 hours
After failing to win a third term in 1912, former president Theodore Roosevelt traveled to Brazil and joined the explorer Cândido Rondon on an expedition down the River of Doubt. Roosevelt and his son Kermit reached the river with Rondon on February 27, 1914. Disease, dwindling supplies, and hostility from local tribes plagued the expedition, and Roosevelt nearly died from an infected wound. The party mapped parts of the river and documented previously unknown species. The river is now called Rio Roosevelt.
