Lewis Carroll's classic gave modern culture the Mad Hatter, the Duchess, the Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit, and the Caterpillar, alongside its nonsensical voice, memorable poems, and vivid set pieces. The story began as a gift for Alice Liddell, daughter of one of Carroll's friends. Carroll told the tale on a riverside boat trip and published the completed manuscript in 1865.
